Coronado, CA -- Discover Brazil, India, Africa, Ireland and more just over the Coronado Bay Bridge. On January 15, 16 and 17 Nations of San Diego International Festival of Dance (Nations) takes place in the state-of-the-art Coronado High Performing Arts Center, 650 D Avenue, Coronado for four public performances showcasing traditional dances from over 15 cultures spanning the globe. Its a banquet of exotic flavors, sumptuous music and superb talent.
Dancer, Choreographer and Director of the Coronado School of the Arts Dance Department Betzi Roe does nothing without flair. As Artistic Director of Nations, she continues to weave dance magic in a "feast" that covers the globe. Audiences will be enchanted with the array of artistry -- from the delicate Chinese fish dance and the raucously precise Barbary Coast Cloggers to the Brazilian athleticism mixed with carnavale. The Nations Festival feeds the cultural soul with diverse dance traditions rarely seen on the stage at one time.
Nations showcases over 150 ethnic dancers and musicians. Highlights of the festival include:
- A unique opportunity to see Special Guest Artists, the Barbary Coast Cloggers. This group of high-energy, crowd pleasing male cloggers from San Francisco perform creative and complex routines -- an audience favorite at the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival. The Barbary Coast Cloggers are featured at every performance.
- Teye sa Thiosanne a thrilling ensemble of traditional West African dancers and drummers truly a feast for eye and ear.
- Newcomer to Nations, Teja Kondapalli - a young East Indian classical dancer will perform a skillful solo in the Kuchipudi style. The dance, called Tarangam, takes place on a metal platter.
- The welcome return of Malone Academy of Irish Dance hailed as the "tops in bravura, by Janice Steinberg at the 2006 festival at the North Park Theatre.
- The visually and athletically stunning traditions of Capoeira Mandinga of San Diego who brought down the house last year with their celebratory "Brazilian Carnival" featuring the physical sparring of capoeira and the drums and feathers of carnival samba.
- Eric Runningpath representing the Kumeyaay tradition, ethereal Chinese dances, Ballet Folklorico at its best, Philippine pageantry and much, much more.
Nations of San Diego International Dance Festival is produced by Coronado School of the Arts. Sponsors include Target, County of San Diego and the Rotary Club of Coronado. Tickets cost $15 to $30 with discounts for military, seniors, students and groups.
